Interesting conclusions from the WordPress VIP report 2023

WordPress VIP is a platform for enterprises with sizeable web deployments. The platforms comes with a lot of bells and whistles and is a premium offering above and the beyond the free or low-cost versions of WordPress mere mortals (including yours truly) use.

WordPress VIP published an report “Content Matters 2023” this week (Feb 2023) that arrived at some interesting conclusions based on a survey of the VIP clients. Top 20% of the surveyed industries were:

  • Technology
  • Consumer electronics

Top 20% of the company sizes and type were: 0 to 200 employees in B2C type companies. Finally top 20% of the surveyed roles were: managers of content marketing and Director/ VP of content marketing.

Why 20%? Pareto principle. Remember for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes (the “vital few”). So these results apply to a vast majority of customer facing marketing in B2C companies with about 200 employees.

This also means as a reader you have to exercise caution. If you are not a part of these industries, companies or company sizes. Take this information with a pinch of salt.

On to the meat of the report. They conclude:

  1. More people and content all around. Think more jobs! The shift to better quality content is changing the total quantity of content produced.
  2. Teams and budgets are still growing, slowly. Connect content to a brand’s goals to grow more.
  3. If leadership does not understand the value of content. Resources dedicated to content cannot grow. Find data to support content.
  4. Help more people (across departments/ teams) understand content analytics. No visibility, no value.
  5. Personalization and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you are drowning in content or under pressure to keep generating more, ask yourself: does this customer segment have all that it needs to make a choice? Fill in the gaps.
